I finally decided to purchase a new copy of Miles Davis‘ seminal jazz fusion double album Bitches Brew last month when it saw it on sale at a reasonable price. I’ve never really liked Bitches Brew despite its reputation and I realized that this might be because the thick old school double CD I bought back in the 1990s was poorly mastered. Apparently, according to many on-line sources, that old CD release sounded extremely muddy and many of the details were hidden by the bad mix.
Listening to the new CDs I bought (I think it is the Legacy Edition, with 2 CDs and 1 DVD), I could immediately hear the difference and it is one of the most night and day experiences I’ve heard from different masters of CDs. I’m hearing a lot more percussions now and it really changed my impression of the album.

Congrats on your re-discovery, but take it from a mad Miles fan – try to get your hands on the Jack Johnson sessions – it’s an album recorded a while after this, when Miles decided to make “the best rock band in the world”.
Also, many of the recordings on the sessions would afterwards become the album “Electric”, so you should also watch out for that one.

I’m a fan of Miles Davis’ music as well and I do have the Jack Johnson sessions (the 5 CD box set).
I have always preferred the Jack Johnson album to Bitches Brew, partly because I’m more of a rock than jazz fan, and I think Jack Johnson is a lot easier to like because it really rocks hard. Of all the key Miles albums, I still find Bitches Brew the least accessible and am hoping that given more time with this new copy of the album, I’ll come to appreciate it more.
It took me a while to wrap my ears around the Bitches Brew album but I definitely warmed up to it.
I have to agree about the Tribute to Jack Johnson album. It is my favorite Miles recording. John McLaughlin delivers some killer guitar playing and the rest of the band is in sublime form. Miles was right, he could put together the best rock band in the world.
